Books read in 2015 – no. 27 – Atlas of Remote Islands

Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty islands I have never set foot on and never will by Judith Schalansky, (Translator Christine Lo), 2010

8197735original title: Atlas der abgelegenen Inseln: Fünfzig Inseln, auf denen ich nie war und niemals sein werde

This is a pretty, unusual, but ultimately bleak little book. The maps, at first glance so alluring, are actually rendered only in monochrome – and so many of the remote islands have unhappy or tragic tales attached to them.

My other atlases are colourful, vibrant and uplifting, every page feels like a journey. As this book’s subtitle hints, it aches with unfulfilled longing.
